There is practically no wire on our front that the enemy wire is thick & in very good order with no obvious gaps in it.

 

LOOS  25/8/16
Wiring commenced on all the company fronts and on sides of craters.  Attempts made to improve trenches last night almost nullified by enemy T.  M. bombardment today.  The work of putting in order the front & support lines is likely to be slow and tedious.

     Our patrols confirm the reports as to the bad state of our wire and the excellent state of the enemy's wire.  Patrols also report that the enemy are working hard in their saps.

     An Officers patrol consisting of 2 Lt HM Thomas, 1 NCO & 6 men left our trenches at  M.  6.d 8.71/2 at 10.50 p.m. with the intention of trying to get a prisoner from a working party which could be plainly heard opposite our right coy front.  The patrol found it impossible to get through the enemy is wire.  They encountered first, a trip wire, then a wide low belt of barbed wire, and beyond that a belt of thick high wire.

     Casualties  -  2 O.R killed  &  2 O.R wounded.

Work on trenches and wire continued are trenches battered in almost as quickly as they are put in order.

Trenches, both front & support lines of left and centre Coys heavily bombarded by T. M's.The trenches were knocked in in almost 12 places.  These trenches were cleaned during the night & sides revetted as far as possible.  The constant hammering of our support line is probably due to the fact that 2 of our Stokes guns fire from  placements therein.  It appears that if the support line is to be
