Major Gough was born in Llanelli at about the same time as uncle Arthur was born in Pontardulais. His father was born in Gloucester, long renowned for the fighting qualities of the Gloucestershire Regiment.

Although he occasionally took temporary command of the 17th Welsh and on he never achieved permanent command. He was awarded two Military Crosses, the second for his part in the Attack on Bourlon Wood.

His account of the action at Bourlon Wood makes interesting reading as does the correspondence between his brother and the War Office when settling matters for Major Gough's wife and two young children following his death.

Major Gough's death was really quite tragic. The Diary of the 18th Battalion The Welsh Regiment indicates that he should have returned to England on leave. He died in France in April 1918 from wounds received when hit in the groin by shell splinters.
