At 5:10 p.m. a telephoned message was received from the 119th Inf Bde to the effect that the French on our right had sent up a SOS rocket. The French liaison Corporal attached to our headquarters was immediately sent to the French Battalion Headquarters to make enquiries. Hostile Artillery was active behind our front lines and our own Artillery retaliated. When the French corporal returned it was found out that the signal the French sent up was not the SOS signal but a signal showing that the British Artillery was firing short into their front line.
