CROISILLES (SECTOR)
JAN 23rd

Bt holding the Front Line System of Post in front of TUNNEL
   TRENCH.

The Artillery fire was active on both sides. We were shelling new work in COPSE TRENCH & Working Parties. The BOSCHE endeavoured to find our Battery positions but failed, his shots falling short of them. Sniping was again indulged in like the previous day. The enemy also appeared to be nervous as he fired off a large number of Very lights during the hours of darkness. Patrolling was again of no use as the ground was too heavy for good & sllent work. The Bn front was therefore guarded by a system of Listening Posts pushed well in front of our wire. Inter Company relief "A" & "C" Coys relieving "D" & "B" respectively.

Bn holding the Front Line System of Posts in front of TUNNEL TRENCH. Our Artillery were very active especially in the early morning about 7 a.m. They then fired salvoes at intervals. At 11 a.m. Our artillery had a practise shoot against a prospective aircraft (low flying) attack. Hostile Artillery was fairly quiet only he fired periodically on our C.T.'s. Our Snipers & Observers were fairly active both in rifle shooting & getting the Artillery on to targets. Listening posts were pushed well outside our wire to guard the Bn Front against Hostile attacks.
