CALONNE    8/7/16
Front line about HAUNTED HOUSE Corner from Boyan 212 to Boyan 210 is very badly battered and in most places untenable. This part of the line is guarded at night by bombing post on 'A' Coys left & 'B' Coys right respectively. Until this line is re-established a back line is to be established and firebays made along the trench running from WALL St through DOWTY'S POST to BIRDCAGE walk. The 12th S.W. B., with R. E. assistance have been detailed to carry this out during the night of July 8/9, 1916, the 17th Welsh providing covering parties and patrols between DOWTY'S post and HAUNTED HOUSE.
While this work was in progress heavy enemy trench mortar fire commenced with the result that 2 of the 17th Welsh, 3 of the S. W. B and 1 R. E. were killed and several others wounded. On this occasion 37852 L- Cpl E.J. B. Stiff, 17th Welsh Rgt. behaved with great gallantry.

During the night A & D Coys lines were also bombarded by trench mortars and several casualties occurred. Enemy trench mortar appeared to fire from M. b. 7. 4. Artillery retaliation
