party consisting of 3 Officers - LT TREVOR - JONES 2/LT.
W.J.GRiFFiThs [as written - GGD] & 2/LT A.J.ELMiTT & 40 O.R. -
the whole under the direction of CAPT W.P. STRATTON left
our Right Coy front at "C" ravine (R. 8c 7.5) about 12.45
am. and proceeded towards FARM TRENCH. The party carried 2 Bangalore
torpedoes intending to blow a gap in the enemy's wire & thus enter
hostile TRENCh. 2/LT ELMITT led the party detailed
to carry the torpedoes which were safely placed in position under the
wire. The fuses were then fired but failed to explode the torpedoes whch
were withdrawn & taken back to our lines. The party then endeavoured
to find a gap in the hostile wire but without success. As the raiding
party were retiring to our lines sounds of bombing were heard coming from
the direction of "B" ravine and shortly after a strong hostile
patrol was seen making off rapidly towards the sunken road on the right
of the Battalion front. 2/LT GRiFFiThs immediately detached a few
men from our party & endeavoured to cut off the hostile raiders &
succceeded in forcing them to abandon one of our wounded who was being
carried away as a prisoner. It was found that an enemy patrol had entered
our lines near "B" ravine & had bombed a L.G. post causing
5 O.R. casualties wounded.
