Lt. Col. A. Bryant arrived back from leave from England - Batt moved forward - The four companies going to DESSART WOOD and BHQ to FINS


FINS 5-5-17

Battalion received orders to attack LA VAQUERIE at 11 pm in conjunction with the 12th Bn S.W.B. Disposition of companies was as follows:- Assaulting Companies 'C' - 'A'. "B" ub support and 'D' in reserve. The Battalion moved forward in consequence at 7 p.m. and were met at 9 pm at sunken road N. end of GOUZEAUCOURT by guides from the 12th S.W.B. who led the Batt forward to the front outpost line preparatory to the attack.

The operation was in the nature of a large raid commencing at 11 pm and the Batt were to remain on their objective for 2 hours and retire at 1 am - the object being "To inflict loss on the enemy, lower his oral, and secure prisoners and material".

The assaulting companies, moppers-up (100 men furnished by the 19th R.W.F.) Support Company and T.ms & R.E's were placed in their respective positions by Major R.J. Andrews M.C. (who was in charge of our part of the operaitons) and punctualy at 11 pm our artillery commenced their barrage as arranged.

The assaualting companies together with the restof the party ^ |(except D Co who occupied original lines)| moved forward steadily & coolly under our barrage fire in excellent order. Our barrage was very good but
