VAQUERIE The assaulting companies "C" - "A" forced their way in good style through the village, in spite of very thick wire and obstacles, and a good deal of hostile opposition. All objectives were gained & the trenches in R.16 C. cleared of the enemy. "A" company then sent out a patrol under 2/Lt Waring which proceeded along the road by the church in a N.E. direction & endeavoured to gain touch with the Battalion on our let, but finding no signs of the Battn the patrol withdrew owing to intense M.G. & rifle fire - one prisoner was captured by this patrol. Numerous Very lights & coloured rockets were sent up by the enemy who fired many aerial darts into the village throught the operations. Many casualties were inflicted on the enemy; five prisoners were taken (2 wounded) and several wounded Germans, including a mortally wounded German officer, were left behind The prisoners beonged to the 8th Coy 459th Inf Regt. The withdrawal of the attacking party, through the support company "B" was effected in splendid order at ^ |1 am| and all our casualties evacuated - a difficult task in view of the darkness & uncut wire. Major Andrews, the Intelligence Officer, together with a party of signallers & runners followed the raiding party and estrablished a post at R.21 b 6.5. Here a wire was run back to Battle H.Q. - at point R.26 b 9.9 in the sunken road and communications
