second belt of hostile wire. A large hostile wiring party was
seen & our patrol withdrew to our advanced trenches. Our M.Gs fired
on & dispersed the enemy wiring party. At 2 AM our party again went
out with the same objective. The enemy was very alert & when our patrol
was within 40 yds of the hostile wire the enemy opened up a heavy M.G.
barrage & rifle-grenaded NO MAN LAND in front of his wire.
Our party was under these circumstances force to withdraw under protection
of our M.Gs & Artillery barrage. The enemy wire was found to consist
of two stout belts of Knife rests & behind these, three rows of thick
barbed trip wire heavily anchored down. Our party returned to our lines
at 5-30 AM.
Casualties :-- 1 officer (2/Lt F.S.LEWIS) very slightly wounded.

reported for duty & was posted temporarily to D Coy.

Major R.J.ANdrews M.C. D.S.O. takes over command of the Battalion
vice Lieut - Col A Bryant D.S.O. who proceeded to Div H Qrs for
duty. Captain W.P.Stratton took over duties as Second in Command.
