Brigade Reserve Occupying Billets vacated by the 18th (S) Bn.The Welsh  Regt.

The Corps Commander has awarded the Military Medal to
   25633  Private Frederick Green
   17th (S) Bn. Welsh Regiment
attd. 119 th Trench Mortar Battery.

For the following the act of gallantry :-

During the afternoon of the 21st September Private Green while serving his mortar during an organised bombardment of the Enemy line noticed that the shell which he was about to place in his gun had started to fuse, apparently due to a faulty pistol head.  He immediately endeavoured to throw the shell  out of the gun pit onto the parados, but the shell fell back  into the pit.  Pte Green without hesitation again picked up the shell and was in this time successful in throwing it clear when it immediately exploded.  The fuse was timed for 9.4 sec only and as there were two other men in the emplacement besides over 100 detonated shells Pte Green's action saved his comrades from death or  injury, and his mortar & emplacement from serious damage.

After this incident Pte Green continued to serve  his gun firing some 50 more shells very rapidly, thereby setting an excellent example to the other men at the gun.
